Website helping businesses kick-start into 2010
As November and December figures proved disappointing for British retailers, a new website launches in Newcastle this month to help businesses tap into the student market as they kick-start their new year trading.
Hosting offers and information from businesses in the region, www.studentnoticeboard.com, launched by ex-Newcastle student Martin Ramsden, is keen to encourage both independents and high street chains to get involved in what will be the biggest student website in the UK, giving them a platform to sell to a powerful audience.
Newcastle has been chosen as one of the first cities to get involved, owing to the vast student population inhabiting the city.
With research showing that students buying habits are*:
1.becoming more and more influenced by their peers
2.becoming more and more focussed on value since the recession
3.largely done online
4.no less frequent during the recession
www.studentnoticeboard.com launches to offer businesses in the city a chance to reach a prime target audience, under one roof by providing special offers to their members, which are then promoted in a dedicated area of their trusted site.
With a record number of students at Newcastle's two universities, Newcastle and Northumbria, more than 42,000 students enrolled in this academic year, they provide a crucial buffer to the economic downturn, with education bringing in £900 million a year to the city’s economy.
As Christmas statistics showed the rise of the discount codes amongst students www.studentnoticeboard.com wants to give businesses a platform to continue to gain student expenditure all year round by providing offers through the website.
Business owner, Dave Beers, of night club Back to Basics said: “We're excited about being involved in www.studentnoticeboard.com as part of our new business strategy of 2010. Students are a huge market for us and until now our approach to reach them has had to have been quite sporadic. Having a central site to promote our business on will be a huge benefit”.
www.studentnoticeboard.com is the brainchild of designer Martin Ramsden, an ex-Newcastle student who designed the website after creating a survey to find out what students really want to know and do. He explained: “The aim of the site is to help students go about studying and enjoying themselves, whilst also spending money in the city. Through our website businesses now have the opportunity to promote themselves to their target audience at a very affordable price. We have a great system in place to make the website as easy to use as possible, and once registered the company has complete control over their advert, updating any information as often as they need”.
