Award Winning Ben Huckerby Design Team Welcomes Internship

Leeds award winning interior designer Ben Huckerby is helping under-graduates develop their design skills by launching an intern scheme, offering a year of real industry experience within his team to put selected students a step ahead after leaving university.

Ben saw potential when he was approached by Architectural Design student Adam Price and wanted to share his techniques and knowledge of the industry to mould the design talent of the future.

Adam, currently between his second and third year of his course at Derby University, has been given the opportunity to assist on the complete re-fit of a retirement village in Marbella, Spain, as well as plan, modify and produce a range of furniture layout options for the full interior design of a new build in Leeds.

Ben Huckerby, Northern Design Award winner 2010 and winner of Channel 5's Britain's Best Home in 2008, said: “What struck me most about Adam when he asked for a placement within the company, was his dedication, passion and enthusiasm for the industry. I wanted to help kick-start his design career.

In the current tough economic climate, many companies are reluctant to offer internships, unable to dedicate enough time, training and support. Although it can take a small amount of time to set up and give initial training, it can be beneficial to both parties and add a fresh twist to a company.

I see supporting the talent of the future as a necessity to beating the recession.”

Wetherby based Adam, 20, said: “I spent hours applying for work placements across hundreds of practices in the UK and overseas and was continually turned down, with employers saying they couldn't dedicate enough time to me to make it worth while.

I have to admit I wasn't holding out much hope when I knocked on the office door of Ben Huckerby, clinging to my portfolio, and was amazed when he asked me to come back to discuss arranging an internship and how we could make it beneficial to both of us.

From day one he has welcomed me into the team and I am learning so much every day. It's the perfect opportunity to put to use my design skills and knowledge from university, and gain insight into the role of a designer and how they work.

To be working with Ben and be part of his talented team is a dream start to my future career and I would thoroughly recommend an internship to other students and urge them not to give up.”
