Businessman chooses Leeds for new venture

A business tycoon has invested heavily in the city with a new venture launching this month as he joins forces with the Marriott Hotel empire to launch AM Kitchen and Bar, in the Dyson's Clock Building, offering a fine dining experience for Marriott customers and the general public alike.

Choosing Leeds over his home city of Manchester, former Beat the Boss star, Atif Malik launched at the end of November with a VIP event playing host to Leeds' key business figures, at the new contemporary Indian restaurant.

AM Kitchen & Bar will offer a diverse Halal menu that blends traditional curry dishes with modern twists. The Manchester based entrepreneur chose Leeds as the prime destination, citing Leeds' appreciation for fine dining and vibrancy, as well as the building's link to the Marriott and historical interior for his Yorkshire choice.

One of the country's leading business tycoons Atif, 35, said:“Indian food has a great sense of history and tradition, which is about gracious hospitality, sharing with family and friends and enjoying what comes naturally. This is what the essence of Indian dining is all about at AM Kitchen and Bar and we feel this is reflected in the Dyson's Clock Building venue, one of Leeds' most traditional buildings.”

Atif added: I decided to open my first restaurant in Leeds as it is such a vibrant city with a real passion for fine dining. The glamorous interior gives an exclusive atmosphere and the diverse menu using fresh local ingredients cooked by experienced Indian masterchefs will tantalise taste buds on all levels.”

Atif and The Marriott invited over 150 of Leeds' key business figures to sample the fine cuisine and indulge in a celebration of Bollywood glamour on 25th November as the restaurant was transformed into a Bollywood filmset for one night only, celebrating the restaurant's arrival and marking the middle of National Curry Week.

Guests were dazzled by Bollywood dancers, and voted for a signature cocktail to be added to the menu, all in sumptuous surroundings created with the help of one of Bradford's most famous Asian businesses, Bombay Stores.

Marriott Hotel General Manager Tom Orange said: ”AM Kitchen & Bar is a great addition to what we have to offer here at the Leeds Marriott. Halal dining is something our guests have wanted for a while and this has provided that added facility and choice to both business and leisure customers alike. I am sure that AM will be present in other Marriott Hotels within the vast portfolio in the future!

AM Kitchen & Bar is open to Marriott guests as well as the general public and is available to cater for large functions, weddings and parties.

Notes to Editor:

  • The venue is steeped with history after beginning life as the Dyson Clock Shop which first opened its doors for business in 1875. “Tempus Fugit” meaning 'Time Flies' is inscribed under the infamous clock face under which lovers met in the early part of the 1900's. The vast amount of history that it is famous for is still visible today including two opulent 'grand chandeliers' which were acquired in 1890 from a Paris exhibition using money won on a bet in Monte Carlo. The old repair counter has also been adapted into a bar and the cashiers office is now a private VIP dining area.
